Only three runners—just three—have survived what we jokingly (but not really) call the Pennsylvania Grand Slam Sufferfest Series. It’s not official. There’s no medal, no plaque, no finish-line hug. Just the quiet acknowledgement that some people willingly stack five of Pennsylvania’s hardest ultramarathons into a single six-month span and come out the other side more or less intact.
To earn entry into this very small, very questionable club, a runner must complete:
-
Hyner Trail Challenge 50K — the PA trail racing rite of passage.
-
Worlds End Ultramarathon 100K — a wilderness odyssey with no easy miles and no tomorrow.
-
Ironstone 100K — 100 kilometers of ridgeline punishment and quartzite reminders of your questionable life choices.
-
Eastern States 100 — the high altar of Pennsylvania suffering circumnavigating the "Wild and Bewildering" River/Course.
-
Black Forest 100K — a dark yet epic run through the Reaper’s backyard.
This page exists for one reason: so the efforts of these runners aren’t lost to tall tales told during long runs and half-remembered stories. Their names deserve a place to live—somewhere between legend and a warning to others.
